The expansion tank has enough space to allow for the expanding of water as a result of heating. It is normally placed at the highest place of the house like the attic area, taking up space. It serves a dual purpose by heating the house and also supplying heated water.
For many years now, pumped/vented systems have been the norm for Gas Central Heating.
The sealed Central Heating system is one that more and more people are opting for these days. No water tanks are needed with the sealed system. There are benefits to have this closed type of system with pipework and tanks being unnecessary.
- The problem of freezing pipes is eliminated.
- No maintenance work on the tank or pipes that would be in the attic in a pumped/vented system.
- The risk of leakage is decreased as there are fewer pipes and the system is less complex.
- The air cannot enter the system as its sealed and hence there are lesser chances of sludge, corrosion and airlocks developing.
- Can be flushed out under pressure if needed by the mains water supply.
All the required controls and safety devices are incorporated into the sealed Gas Central Heating systems. The water for the system is provided directly from the main water pipe of the house. The pressure of the main water supply benefits the hot water outlets and gives a healthy shower.
A pressure vessel containing compressed gas, which is kept separate from the sealed system by a diaphragm, is used to allow any pressure variations. If the pressure is very high in the system, then the water will escape from the safety valve, and if the pressure is too low, then the safety valve will open to let the water in.
Compared to any other form of heating, Gas Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. Moreover, they offer all kinds of control, which are usually not found in other heating systems giving you a more enjoyable environment.
